Fair Lending Frontlines: Detecting Discrimination, Preventing Mortgage Fraud & Protecting Homebuyers
Housing counselors are often on the front lines when consumers encounter questionable lending practices, potential discrimination, or mortgage fraud. Fair Lending Frontlines is an interactive workshop designed to strengthen counselors’ ability to recognize warning signs, educate and protect clients, and respond appropriately when concerns arise.
Participants will explore key fair lending protections, common forms of lending discrimination, mortgage fraud schemes, deceptive or predatory practices, and red flags that may surface throughout the homebuying and mortgage process. Through realistic scenarios and practical examples, counselors will learn how to distinguish between a concerning situation and one that may warrant further review, help clients preserve important documentation, and identify appropriate referral and reporting resources.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be better prepared to Recognize, Respond, Refer, and Protect, four essential skills for supporting consumers as they navigate the mortgage marketplace.
